Portfolio

Tiefenbach Control Systems GmbH

Machinery and Plant Engineering

Electrohydraulic control units, “heavy-duty” valves, and sensors for mining, offshore applications, and industry: this is no ordinary product portfolio for a German medium-sized company. This is Tiefenbach Control Systems (TCS) – a classic “Hidden Champion” with demanding customers worldwide, products “Made in Germany,” and a global distribution network.

Challenges

Many investors are drawn to software and medical technology. But who is the right entrepreneurial partner for a technology supplier in the mining industry? Especially when this supplier, at the time of investment, is grappling with pandemic-related trade restrictions and generating around one-third less revenue than in previous years?

At Family Trust, our own entrepreneurial experience has taught us to look beyond such “details” and seek out the hidden gems of the Mittelstand everywhere. With Tiefenbach, we found one: a company with brilliant prospects. Without TCS’s automation, safety, and control technologies, many jobs worldwide would be far less secure and efficient.

Investment approach

Making the right strategic and operational decisions to make the company even stronger and more crisis-proof as a supplier – this is the aim of our investment approach for TCS. It’s all about balance, targeted impetus and timing. We started working on this immediately after joining the company.

Development since acquistion

Important milestones included the establishment of a joint venture with the largest US system integrator, the relocation of the software development team back to the company headquarters and thus closer to production, the acquisition of a core supplier to strategically secure the company’s own supply chain and the acquisition of Exprotec as a company with strong synergies with Tiefenbach.
